PE and Games

Intent

Here at Stokenchurch we aim to inspire a love of PE through developing children’s physical literacy.

PE at Stokenchurch aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical well-being in our children now and for their future. Physical fitness is an important part of leading a healthier lifestyle. It teaches self-discipline and that to be successful you must work hard, show resilience and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved.

It is our intent at Stokenchurch to inspire lifelong participation in sport by building firm foundations, upon which they can grow. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities. All children receive specialist PE coaching through our PPA provision. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and empathy.

Implementation

We provide a range of extra-curricular sporting activities throughout the year including; Football, Netball, Gymnastics, Athletics, Multi-Sports, Cricket and Judo.  Our annual Sports Day takes place during the Summer Term, and it is always a fantastic celebration of physical activity and sport at Stokenchurch.

We are incredibly lucky to have our own swimming pool on site. Children from F2 to Year 6 take part in weekly swimming lessons throughout the Summer Term. These are delivered by specialist swim teachers and monitored by our own team of lifeguards. In 2022-23, 98% of our Year 6 children met the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively and performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

We have welcomed local clubs to share their expertise and have taken part in many workshops to raise the profile of PE and Games. We enjoy celebrating the success of our pupils both in school and externally.

Additionally, in Year 5, the children visit Willen Lake to take part in four different sporting activities and, in Year 6, pupils have the opportunity to participate in the school journey to the Isle of Wight, where outdoor and adventurous activities are taught.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum has inspired children to take part in sporting activities outside of school. Our children are taught the skills to prepare them for life and further competition at secondary school. Children have also gone on to compete at county and national levels. Stokenchurch provides children with life skills and water safety knowledge to help make them wise in the future.
