Welcome to the Grammarthon

This week in English, we are focusing on practising skills we have learnt earlier in the year, thinking about grammar and punctuation.

Monday 4th May:

Task 1: 10 minutes (minimum) of independent or shared reading, followed by a reading response activity from the reading journals hand out (available below).

 Task 2: Parentheses

✎ Read through the presentation about using parentheses.

✎ Select and complete Level One (1 star), Level 2 (2 stars) or Level 3 (3 stars) from Parenthesis Activity Worksheets (available to download below). Each level is two pages, and the document contains all levels.

Task 3: Spelling: Tricky Words (Unit 27)

From the Nelson Spelling textbook (may be a photocopied booklet): Unit 27 on pages 58 and 59. Complete in the exercise book provided. We recommend recording the short date, subject and focus at the start (just like we would in school, but simpler to help you keep track).

  • Must: Complete Focus
  • Should: Complete Extra
  • Could: Complete Extension

Tuesday 5th May:

Task 1: 10 minutes (minimum) of independent or shared reading, followed by a reading response activity from the reading journals hand out (available below).

Task 2: Punctuation and inverted commas (speech marks)

✎ Visit the BBC Bitesize Daily Lesson by clicking here.

✎ Work through the lesson, watching the videos, reading the information and completing the interactive activities.

✎ Download the activity sheets (available from the site or to download below). Choose Level One (1 star), Level 2 (2 stars) or Level 3 (3 stars). No cheating - the answers are included and you can use them to check your work once you are finished!

Wednesday 6th May:

Task 1: 10 minutes (minimum) of independent or shared reading, followed by a reading response activity from the reading journals hand out (available below).

Task 2: Using Colons and Semi-colons

✎ Read through the presentation about using colons and semi-colons, completing the activities as you go.

✎ Select and complete Level One (1 star), Level 2 (2 stars) or Level 3 (3 stars) from Parenthesis Activity Worksheets (available to download below). No cheating - the answers are included and you can use them to check your work once you are finished!

Thursday 7th May:

Task 1: 10 minutes (minimum) of independent or shared reading, followed by a reading response activity from the reading journals hand out (available below).

Task 2: Punctuation and Grammar Challenge Cards

✎ Download the Punctuation and Grammar Challenge Cards (available below).

✎ Have a look through them and think about the different skills you will need to use. Each challenge is quick to complete and they cover a wide range of skills that you have already learnt in school (there are two that you have not yet covered - bonus points if you can identify which two they are).

  • Must: Complete 4 of the challenges.
  • Should: Complete 8 of the challenges.
  • Could: See if you can complete them all (apart from the two we have not yet covered).

Friday 8th May:

Task 1: 10 minutes (minimum) of independent or shared reading, followed by a reading response activity from the reading journals hand out (available below).

Task 2: VE Day (Informal task for those who would like to find out more)

✎ Use the links on the VE Day page to find out more about what VE Day is, and why we celebrate it.
