The activities from the Collins Busy Ant 5c Pupil Book this week focus on short division.

Monday 22nd June:

Task 1: Spend 5-10 minutes practising your times tables on TTRockStars. Let's keep up our (unofficial) title of reigning champion year group.

 Task 2: Division - ThHTO ÷ O with a decimal remainder (pages 84 and 85)

Before having a go at the questions in the book, watch this video by clicking here.

  • Must: complete Challenge 1. Remember to look at the examples for how to write your answers. (If you find this a little tricky, you may begin with the support
    sheet which is attached below.)
  • Should: complete Challenge 1 and Challenge 2.
  • Could: complete Challenge 1, Challenge 2 and Challenge 3.

There is also an extension task available to download below – scroll to the bottom of this page to download it.

Tuesday 23rd June:

Task 1: Choose and play a game from the 'Play' section on Mathletics.

 Task 2: Division - ThHTO ÷ O with a fraction remainder (pages 86 and 87)

Before answering the questions in the book, watch one or both of these videos for a reminder how to show remainders as a fraction: Video 1 and/or Video 2

  • Must: complete Challenge 1 (if you find this a little tricky, you may begin with the support
    sheet which is attached below).
  • Should: complete Challenge 1 and Challenge 2.
  • Could: complete Challenge 1, Challenge 2 and Challenge 3.

Wednesday 24th June:

Task 1: Spend 5-10 minutes practising your times tables on TTRockStars. Let's keep up our (unofficial) title of reigning champion year group.

  Task 2: Spiralling Decimals Game

For this investigation, it would be helpful to have a partner to play the game with. First, download the instruction sheet available below (Spiralling Decimal Instructions) and read through them carefully. Then download the game board (or draw your own) and play the game! Who can get the most wins?

Thursday 25th June:

Task 1: Choose and play a game from the 'Play' section on Mathletics.

 Task 2: Division - ThHTO ÷ O by rounding remainders (pages 88 and 89)

  • Must: complete Challenge 1. For this challenge, you can record remainders with an r followed by however many are left over (e.g. 24 r2).
  • Should: complete Challenge 1 and Challenge 2. For this challenge, you will need to read the word problems carefully, and solve them before deciding whether to round your answer up or down.
    - For example, if the wedding cake I'm baking requires 40 eggs and eggs are sold in cartons of 12, I would do 40 ÷ 12 = 3 r4. Because there is a remainder of 4, 3 cartons of eggs wouldn't be enough for the recipe (I'd only have 36 and I would still need 4 more to get the 40 required eggs). Therefore I will have to buy an extra carton of eggs, meaning I need to round my final answer up from 3 r4 to 4 cartons in order to have enough eggs for the recipe.
  • Could: complete Challenge 1, Challenge 2 and Challenge 3.

Friday 26th June:

Task 1: Spend 5-10 minutes practising your times tables on TTRockStars. Let's keep up our (unofficial) title of reigning champion year group.

Task 2: Solving money problems (pages 90 and 91)

  • Must: complete Challenge 1.
  • Should: complete Challenge 1 and Challenge 2.
  • Could: complete Challenge 1, Challenge 2 and Challenge 3.
