Spellings

Children practise applying phonics related spelling rules on a daily basis in their phonics lesson. In addition, there are a list of COMMON EXCEPTION WORDS that all Year 1 children should be able to spell by the end of the year. These words are attached at the bottom of this page. Whilst we learn them in school, please support your child in learning these words at home.
We recommend practising spellings in a variety of ways, rewriting the spellings on post-it notes/ whiteboards/ large pieces of paper / with chalk / with paint / in sand / in flour / with different fun pencils or pens.
Children are no longer tested on a weekly basis. Instead, the children will be given time to complete targeted activities to reinforce that week's spelling rules and practise their common exception words.
