Spring Week 2 11.01.2021

Maths

In Maths this week we will be focussing on the skill of subtraction. Please use the resources below alongside the daily instruction to complete your work.

From this week we will be setting a daily Mathletics tasks that will either link in with your learning from today or revisit a previous taught skill. You may find it useful to complete the Mathletics tasks to start your Maths lesson. Remember to click the ‘i’ for a short video clip to help you.

We are also asking children to continue practising their times tables. To help with this we are setting 10 minutes of ‘garage’ for this week. Simply login and you will only be able to play in this game mode.  We highly recommend practising little and often maybe 2 minutes each day. Of course, children can complete more games if they would like to and even challenge their friends/teachers in Rockslam. If parents would like any further advice on helping your child learn their tables please visit https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/maths/primary-multiplication-division/help-with-times-tables/

We will be checking your scores and progress throughout the week through the use of Mathletics and Rockstar TT.

If any additional support is needed please do not hesitate to contact the Year 4 team via yearfour@stokenchurchprimary.bucks.sch.uk.

Monday 11th January

Mathletics Task - Count Backward Patterns

LO – To use mental methods for subtraction

These activities (and all activities for this week) are from the Collins Maths book we usually use in school.

  • Must: Complete Challenge 1
  • Should: Complete Challenge 1 and 2
  • Could: Complete Challenge 1, 2 and 3

There is also a support (if finding Challenge 1 tricky) and an extension task available to download below - scroll to the bottom of this page.

Tuesday 12th January

Mathletics Task - 3 Digit Difference with Zeros

LO – To use formal subtraction

For today focus on the skill of formal (column) subtraction rather than estimation. (please watch the video below to remind you on how to use this method)

  • Must: Complete Challenge 1
  • Should: Complete Challenge 1 and 2
  • Could: Complete Challenge 1, 2 and 3

There is also a support (if finding Challenge 1 tricky) and an extension task available to download below - scroll to the bottom of this page.

Wednesday 13th January

Mathletics Task - Subtracting Colossal Columns

LO – To use formal subtraction

For today you may like to focus on estimation and using inverse operations to check your answer. (please watch the video below which shows you how to use these checking methods)

  • Must: Complete Challenge 1
  • Should: Complete Challenge 1 and 2
  • Could: Complete Challenge 1, 2 and 3

There is also a support (if finding Challenge 1 tricky) and an extension task available to download below - scroll to the bottom of this page.

Thursday 14th January

Mathletics Task - I am Thinking of a Number!

LO – To solve 2 step word problems

For today you may like to use a bar method to help solve the word problems. This is shown in the video below. You could also use the formal methods we have been practising this week.

  • Must: Complete Challenge 1
  • Should: Complete Challenge 1 and 2
  • Could: Complete Challenge 1, 2 and 3

There is also a support (if finding Challenge 1 tricky) and an extension task available to download below - scroll to the bottom of this page.

Friday 15th January

Mathletics Task - Live Mathletics – Click the green play button at the top of the page > Enter the exciting world of live Mathletics. We suggest starting on Level 3. Play at least 3 games, each lasting a minute.

LO – To investigate the skill of subtraction

Maths investigations are designed to support children to visualise their maths problem solving. Drawing diagrams may help children to identify and understand patterns in their maths.

Make 37 Investigation

Four bags contain a large number of 1s, 3s, 5s and 7s.

Pick any ten numbers from the bags above so that their total is 37.

Is there more than one possible solution?

Can you spot any patterns in your solutions?

Key questions

What do you notice about the numbers in the bags?

What do they have in common?

Possible extension

Can you make 37 with a different number of numbers?

How many?

Can you explain why?

Possible support

You can use a lower total and fewer numbers to make the arithmetic easier without losing the mathematical thinking and reasoning. For example, the challenge could be to make 15 using four numbers.
